Johnson, John Hercules

Rank: Lieutenant

Regiment: Royal Air Force

Biography: Son of William Johnson, Haroldswick ; born Haroldswick, Shetland, 19 October 1895 ; student in Agriculture, 1915-17. Johnson was one of the few agricultural students of his time who made his influence felt among the students of other faculties without neglecting the affairs of his own department where he did useful work, particularly as Secretary of the Agricultural Society in 1916-17. He left in April 1917 to join the Royal Air Force, and after a strenuous nine months training as a Pilot was sent to France. He was attached to the 43rd, a squadron of single-seater fighting 'planes, each carrying two quick-firing guns, and soon earned a good reputation as a fearless and skilful airman. Near Noyon, on 9 June 1918, he was reported missing and subsequently presumed killed on that date. His Major wrote : "He was a great loss to the Squadron, as he was a good Pilot and very keen".
