Hunt, William George Philip

Regiment: 10th Battalion Essex Regiment

Biography: Son of Philip Hunt ; born Sleaford, Lincolnshire, 27 September 1891 ; educated Cirencester Grammar School ; graduated M.A., 1912 and became Assistant Master at Newport Grammar School. During his University career, Hunt was an enthusiastic member of "U" Company, and represented the Battalion at Bisley in 1911. On the outbreak of war he rejoined his old company and remained with them until Christmas 1914 when he received a commission in the 10th Essex Regiment. He served for a time in home camps and then in France and Belgium from. 1915 to 1917. The excellence of his work is shown by his rapid rise to the rank of Captain and by the award of the Military Cross, "for conspicuous gallantry in action". Hunt was wounded in action at Ypres on 31 July, and died in hospital at Le Touquet on 15 August 1917.
