Cowie, John Winchester

Biography: Son of George Cowie, fisherman ; born Buckie, 5 July 1891 ; Arts student, 1911-13, thereafter clerk with Messrs. Murray & Cowie, fish salesmen, Buckie. Cowie was in doubt as to his future career, the call for service came, he recognized that this was his work, and volunteered at once. Enlisting in the Hawke Battalion Royal Naval Division, 8 October 1914, he served at Gallipoli until our forces were withdrawn, then proceeded with his Battalion to France, took part in the great charge at Beaucourt in November 1916, when he was slightly wounded, and was killed in action at Beaumont Hamel, 22 January 1917. One who knew him well writes : ''He volunteered at once and in that and in his service acted with cheerful alacrity and unselfish courage''.
