Biography: Son of William R. Gillanders; born Aberdeen, 16 January 1877. M.A. (Ill Math.), 1900. Arnott Prize. Gunner, Reserve Heavy Artillery, 11 January 1916; 2nd Lieutenant (Special List), 20 April 1916; transferred Royal Engineers. Served-France, Belgium, February 1916-November 1918; Army of Occupation, November 1918-September 1919. Final rank, Acting Captain. Military Cross, 3 June 1919.
