Biography: Son of Joseph L. Gilbert; born London, 26 March 1893. M.A. (II. Classics), 1913. Commissioned, Queen Victoria's Own Corps of Guides (Indian Army), January 1915; attached to 24th Punjabis. Served-N.W. Frontier, Mesopotamia, 1915-18. Final rank, Captain. Mentioned in despatches.
