Catto, Robert Kilgour Thom

Regiment: 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders

Biography: Son of James Catto, wine-merchant ; born Aberdeen, 28 February 1873 ; educated Aberdeen Grammar School ; student in Medicine, 1891-92. At the outbreak of war he was in the firm of Messrs. James Catto Ltd., Aberdeen, where he had acted as Managing Director for fifteen years. In October 1914 Catto was commissioned in the Gordons and served with the 2/4th and, later, with the 1/4th Battalions in France from May 1916. He was only a few months in France when he fell, killed by a stray shell, at Beaumont Hamel, 5 November 1916. His Colonel wrote of him : ''By his death I have lost an excellent officer who was most valuable and efficient, and was one who was remarkably cool and brave under fire on all occasions''.

Burial Details: Buried at Mailly Wood Cemetery, Maily - Maillet, Plot 1, Row A, Grave 19.
