Esson, Herbert William

Biography:

Son of Francis Esson; born Aberdeen, 26 August 1894. Arts, 1914-15, 1918-19, 1919-. Private, 2/4th Gordon Highlanders, November 1914; transferred to Machine Gun Corps. Served - Home, 1914-15, 1916, 1917-19; Flanders, June 1915-January 1916, December 1916-August 1917. Final rank, Captain. Military Cross, 1918.


After war worked in Malaya and was lieutenant-colonel in command of the Local Defence Corps but was captured and spent three and a half years in the Changi prisoner-of-war camp. He obtained his MA in 1951 from the University of Aberdeen shortly before he died. See Aberdeen University Review XXXIV, p.314.
