Biography: Son of James Elder; born Gibraltar, 4 February 1880. M.A. (I English), 1902; D.Litt., 1914; Caithness Prize. Joined Aberdeen Military Training Association (later 1st Volunteer Brigade Gordon Highlanders), 1914. War work -Aberdeen Red Cross Society (Transport Section), 1914-18.
