Joss, Alexander William

Biography: Son of Alexander Joss, farmer ; born Disblair, Aberdeenshire, 14 June 1888 ; educated at Robert Gordon's College ; entered the law office of Messrs. A. & W. Robertson, solicitors, Aberdeen, and attended Law classes at the University, 1907-09. After making a fine record, Joss qualified as a solicitor in 1911 and took up a position in the law office of Messrs. Maclay, Murray & Spens, of Glasgow. He joined the Glasgow Highlanders (9th H.L.I.) in September 1914 as a private, and, feeling he could do most good in the ranks, refused promotion. He saw much active service in France at Bethune, La Bassee, and High Wood, and was reported ''missing'' in the advance on 15 July 1916. He was last seen assisting a wounded man in No Man's Land, and was later reported as ''presumed died on that date''.
