Biography
Classical and oriental scholar. Born at Stamford, Lincs. 1780. Entered St Paul's School, London 1793, then Charterhouse School also 1793. Attended Trinity Coll., Cambridge 1798, migrated to Sidney Sussex Coll., 1800. B.A., Cambridge, 1802, M.A., 1805, B.D., 1811. Fellow of Sidney Sussex Coll., 1804. Travelled to Constantinople 1804-6 as chaplain to the British Embassy. Curate of Great St Mary's, Cambridge, 1806. Chaplain at Smyrna 1810-4. Professor of Arabic at Cambridge, 1815-21. Rector of Swanscombe, Kent, 1818-67. Elected to the Royal Asiatic Society 1824. Honorary foreign secretary to the Royal Geographical Society 1836-46. Died Swanscombe 1867.
