Biography: 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyme. Politician and landowner. Born Essex, 1785. Succeeded to the dukedom 1795. Educated Eton 1796-9. Abroad 1803 when war with France was declared, taken prisoner and detained at Tours til 1806. Lord lieutenant of Nottinghamshire 1809-39. Knight of the Garter 1812. Steward of Sherwood Forest. Very opposed to Catholic emancipation, one of the most notorious opponents to the Government's reform bill. Criticised for making politically motivated evictions on his estates - locals burnt his mansion to the ground and broke windows at his London house.
