Biography
Jurist. Born Glasgow, 1848. Educated privately, then Glasgow high school for 3 years. Matriculated Glasgow Univ., 1864, graduated in mathematics 1872. Began a legal apprenticeship 1869, added law courses to his studies and took classes in Edinburgh. Graduated again 1875. Entered a law firm and became partner after 2 years. Began teaching law at Glasgow 1876 (only awarded an annual salary 1894). Joined the Faculty of Advocates 1884. Remembered for his teaching, his efforts to improve legal education, and his academic work. Travelled widely within Europe. Elected to the council of the International Law Association 1903. Died Edinburgh 1904.
