Biography
Botanist and antiquary, M.A. St Andrews c.1650, travelled to France 1657, M.D. Caen 1661, went to live in St Andrews 1667, became local physician, collected local plants, experimented in science and medicine, and made anatomical dissections, moved to Edinburgh 1670, started botanical garden there, active in establishing professorial chairs at Edinburgh University and in the founding of the Royal College of Physicians, became President of Royal Coll. of Physicians 1685
