- Biography
- Minister in America. Born Lowton, now Liverpool. Educated local grammar school, then Toxteth Park. Matriculated Brasenose College, Oxford 1618, but returned to Toxteth very shortly after. Ordained 1619. Suspended 1633 after a frank exchange of views with a visitor to the Archbishop. Decided to emigrate to New England, reached Boston 1635. Played a leading role in shaping Congregationalism there. Published work justifying the New England church. Contributed to the first book printed in English America. Provided the working draft for the results of a synod in 1646. Died Dorchester, 1669.
