Lyell, James Patrick Ronaldson

Biography: Owned c.1920. Book collector. Born Hampstead 1871. Educated Merchant Taylors' School, then University College, London. Admitted solicitor 1894. Justice of the peace at Hampstead and chairman of the magistrates' bench. Began to collect books as early as 1889, especially interested in acquiring incunabula during period 1891-1911. Collected early Spanish books, published a life of Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros, and Early Book Illustration in Spain. Spanish and Armada collections now in Harvard University Library. Also collected Greek and oriental manuscripts, as well as English books printed abroad. Little contact with the British Museum, devoted to the Bodleian. Became a member of New College, Oxford 1932, took the degree of BLitt. Began to acquire medieval manuscripts 1936, eventually had a collection of 250, 100 of these bequeathed to the Bodleian. Died Oxford 1948. His will created a Lyell readership in bibliography at Oxford. Personal and bibliographical papers bequeathed to the Bodleian Library.
