Kames, Henry Home, Lord

Biography: Lawyer, judge and philosopher. Born Kames 1696. Educated at home by private tutors, apprenticed to a writer to the signet aged 16, enrolled in the private civil law college of John Craig. Admitted Faculty of Advocates 1723. Early years in practice were difficult, but began to write on legal topics. Acquired a reasonable legl practice by 1736. Advocate -depute 1737. Appointed ordinary lord of session 1752, took the title Lord Kames. Commission for forfeited estates 1752, board of trustees for fisheries and manufactures 1754, director of the British Linen Company 1754-6. Founder member of the Select Society 1754. Vice-president of the Philosophical Society 1755. Commissioner of justiciary 1763. Interested in agricultural improvement. Wrote many legal works. Died Edinburgh 1782.
