Gatford, Lionel

Biography: Church of England clergyman. Born Sussex. Admitted Jesus Coll., Cambridge 1618, B.A. 1622, proceeded M.A., elected fellow 1625. Ordained Deacon Peterborough 1626. Junior proctor of the university 1632. Proceeded B.D. 1633. Vicar of St Clements, Cambridge 1633. Resigned his fellowship 1638. Rectory of Dennington, Suffolk 1641. Ejected from his parish shortly after the outbreak of the civil war. Manuscript for a royalist pamphlet of his seized by Oliver Cromwell 26 Jan 1643 and Gatsford arrested in his bed at Cambridge. Sent to London and imprisoned in Ely House, Holborn for 17 months. Exchanged for a puritan clergyman imprisoned by royalists at Oxford, 1644. Appointed chaplain for the royalist garrison at Pendennis Castle, Cornwall 1645. Taken prisoner at the surrender of Pendennis Castle, 1646. May have been exiled for a while, was at Jersey and chaplain to Sir Edward Hyde in 1647. Not clear when he returned to England. Created D.D. after the Restoration by royal mandate, restored to the parish of Dennington. Appointed curate of Great Yarmouth 1663. Died of the plague Great Yarmouth, 1665. Published several ecclesiastical works.
