Biography
Philosopher. Born Ardchattan, Argyll, 1819. Educated at home, University of Glasgow for one session 1833, studied philosophy and theology at Edinburgh 1834-42. Ordained in Free Church of Scotland 1843. Chair of logic, New College, Edinburgh 1846. Editor of the North British Review 1850-57. Professor of logic and metaphysics, Univ. of Edinburgh 1856-91. Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Univ. of Edinburgh, 1859-91. Represented the Senate at the University Court 1877-91. Edited George Berkeley's Works 1871, published annotated version of Locke's Essay, 1894, published Philosophy of Theism 1895-7. Recieved honorary degrees from Glasgow (1871), Oxford (1883), Edinburgh (1891) and Aberdeen (L.L.D 1906). Moved to Hawthornden 1891-1907. Moved to Edinburgh 1907. Died Edinburgh 1914.
