Biography

Lt.-Col. John Raymond (Ray) Danson (1893-1976), studied Law at Trinity College, Oxford. He served in both World Wars, earning the M.C. in the 1st and as Lieutenant Colonel, commanding the Fourth Battalion Cheshire Regiment at Dunkirk in the 2nd. After the 1st World War he was employed with his family's company, F. C. Danson & Co., average adjusters. 


Danson supported a number of institutions during his lifetime and on his death bequeathed family archives and collection of antiquities to the National Museums Liverpool. His library which contained a fine collection of early illustrated books was left to Trinity College, Oxford (with 450 volumes of erotica placed on deposit in the Bodleian) and is now kept in the college’s Danson Library.
