Biography

Born Longnewton, Roxburghshire. Matriculated St Leonard's, 1515, M.A., 1517. Probably moved to Glasgow in 1518, where he was incorporated with John Mair. Followed Mair to St Andrews, 1523. Probably also followed Mair to Paris in 1525, where a John Douglas from Dunkeld holds several roles from 1526-1537. Preceptor in the colleges of Presles (1528, 1531) and Montaigu (1533). Procurator of the German nation, 1531, and dean in 1532. B. M., Univ. of Paris, 1536. Granted financial support by Archbishop Beaton in 1537, also associated with Archibald Hay and George Buchanan. Succeeded Hay as Provost of St Mary's College, appointed in 1547. Rector of St Andrews 1551-73. Carried through Archibishop Hamilton's "new foundation" of St Mary's in 1555. Joined the reformers in 1560, and was appointed to the commission which compiled the Scots confession and the First Book of Discipline. Approved by the general assembly for the ministry in 1560. After Hamilton's death in 1571, he was made Protestant archbishop of St Andrews, although there was initially some protest from the general assembly. Died St Andrews, 1574.
