Cairns, David, the younger
Biography
Born Berwickshire 1904, son of a United Presbyterian minister who taught at the United Free Church College in Aberdeen from 1907-1937. Educated Aberdeen Grammar School 1912-16; Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh 1916-22; University of Aberdeen 1922-24; B.A., Balliol College, Oxford 1928; Christ's College, Aberdeen, 1928-31; and postgraduate study at the University of Zurich, 1931-32. He then spent a year as assistant minister of Govan Old Parish before being ordained and inducted to the charge of Bridge of Allan, where he was minister until 1941. He served in the Royal Army Chaplain's Department from 1941 til the end of the Second World War. Secretary to the Student Christian Movement in Oxford, 1946-47. Appointed chair of practical theology at Christ's College, Aberdeen 1947, which he held until his retirement in 1972. Honorary doctorate of divinity, University of Edinburgh, 1953. He died in October 1992, after a long period of frailty.
