Barksdale, Clement

Biography

Church of England clergyman and author. Born 1609 at Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. Educated Abingdon grammar school, matriculated Merton Coll., Oxford, 1626, transferred to Gloucester Hall, grad. B.A., 1629, M.A., 1632. Chaplain of Lincoln College briefly 1637, then moved to Hereford, appointed master of the free school there. Vicar choral and rector of St Nicholas 1641-6. Moved to Hawling, taught at private school and rector there in 1650. While at Hawling, interested in theological discussion and disputation, writing and translating. Published over 30 books, including translations, biographies, poetry and sermons. All designed to foster the development of a moderate, latitudinarian Anglicanism. Greatest significance as the translator of Grotius, helped popularise Grotius. Appointed rector of Naunton and Stow on the Wold 1660-87. Died Naunton 1687.
