Mr Manoj Kumar
Manoj is a Consultant General Surgeon, Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen and Associate Director of Medical Education at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
He is also Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s National Clinical Lead for the Scottish Mortality & Morbidity Program (SMMP), which aims to improve safety reviews and processes in health and social care using a Human Factors or Ergonomics approach and Quality Improvement principles.
He has a keen interest in the application of Human Factors in Healthcare and has also completed a Masters degree in Patient Safety: A Human Factors Approach from the University of Aberdeen. His research interest also includes that of the use of the surgical checklist for which he has led collaborations with colleagues from Ariadne Labs in Boston, Massachusetts.
Manoj is leading the development of a national training program to embed the necessary skills and knowledge to design, lead and participate in effective safety review processes in Scotland. He also led the development of the Professional Practice Block module for mortality and morbidity or team based safety reviews for final year undergraduate medical students at the University of Aberdeen.
He is actively involved in Human Factors training in the UK and internationally. He is an Honorary Clinical Tutor for the MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors at the University of Edinburgh and faculty member for the Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons Master class at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Manoj is a Scottish Quality and Safety Fellow. He is a committee member of the Law Society of Scotland’s Health and Medical Law Subcommittee and an ambassador for the Clinical Human Factors Group.
