The Accountancy Department at the University of Aberdeen carries out cutting-edge interdisciplinary accounting research that displays global excellence in its research outputs. The Department has strengths in five key areas:
The Department’s researchers also have strong links with the Finance, Economics and Management departments, using cross-disciplinary theories and methodologies to address relevant issues in the sustainability accounting and financial reporting areas. The Department’s reach is global: research collaborations are currently under way with with international institutions and researchers based in Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, and the USA to name but a few.

The Economics Department has a well-established tradition of research in applied economics, particularly in the areas of labour economics and energy economics. There are also research interests in macroeconomics, the economics of health and wellbeing, and experimental economics. There are also research interests in macroeconomics, international economics, the economics of health and wellbeing, and experimental economics. There are especially strong links between the Economics Department and Health Economics Research Unit, one of the leading centres in health economics in Europe. The Department's Research Convenor is Professor Catia Montagna. The Department of Economics is also home to the Scottish Experimental Economics Laboratory (SEEL), the Centre for European Labour Market Research (CELMR), and the Working Papers in Economics and Finance In February 2014, the department established EPAKE: the Economics Policy and Knowledge Exchange Steering Committee. The aim of this committee is to facilitate inter- and multi- disciplinary research collaborations with other parts of the university, increase impact and generate grant income. Its primary function is as a point of contact for other parts of the university when they seek economics input, and to build research capacity. The Department of Finance has strengths in applied finance, particularly in the areas of high frequency analysis, (focusing on volatility, derivatives and regulation) and asset pricing with particular emphasis on the integration between macroeconomic variables and asset prices). There are additional research interests in corporate finance, initial public offerings and privatised utilities. The finance group has strong links with both economics and accountancy, using cross-disciplinary methodologies to address relevant issues in finance. There is also a strong interface with the real estate group where shared interests yield research output in the areas of risk measurement and diversification benefits. There is close collaboration with the Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability and the Institute for Rural Research.
