University in new partnership bringing strategic insight to North-East businesses

The University of Aberdeen Business School and Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce have announced a partnership on the School's 2020 programme of business breakfasts.

The flagship series, which has been helping North-East organisations translate thinking into action for almost 30 years, will offer a fresh take on the topics of most importance to the business community, providing a learning and networking forum to discuss the issues essential to successful economic growth in the region.

Over the coming year the programme will include events looking at transport and infrastructure, technology, lifelong learning, digital marketing, international trade, taxation and the economy; and climate change and the energy transition.

Professor Martin Meyer, Head of the University of Aberdeen Business School, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with the Chamber to launch a series of breakfasts aimed at developing vision, knowledge and strategic leadership within North-east businesses. This year marks a significant milestone as we celebrate our 525th anniversary in conjunction with the university’s new 20-year strategy, Aberdeen 2040.

“The Business School has seen a significant growth in students, academics and research and we look forward to continuing to build networks to support local and national companies.”

Seona Shand, membership and events director at the Chamber, added that the new partnership brings a raft of benefits to local companies: “An international faculty with world-leading academic credentials and strong professional links with the business community, partnering with the Business School and it’s diverse network offers significant opportunities for us to bring some really exciting, innovative and thought provoking speakers to the north-east.

“We have worked closely with the Business School to develop the 2020 series with the current and future needs of regional businesses in mind. Our aim is to provide insight and intelligence that delegates can apply today whilst prompting debate and discussion around what needs to happen to ensure a prosperous tomorrow.”

The series kicks off on January 29 by exploring ‘Transformational Leadership’, the future of work as seen through the eyes of millennials and the potential implications for organisations. The fully interactive session, which has already sold out, will encourage reflection on current personal style, the impact of differing styles on organisational behaviour; and provide practical ideas to help navigate the changing work environment to build a high performing culture.

Leading the session will be Chris Matchan, honorary visiting fellow of the University of Aberdeen Business School. Chris had a background in HR wit senior roles at Fujitsu, Diageo, Citibank and Pentland before moving into consulting and teaching. His interests are in the areas of leadership, change, high performing teams and the neuroscience that underpins these.

He will be joined by Dr Trevor Morrow, senior lecturer in management studies at the Business School and programme leader for the MBA and MBA (Global). Trevor has 25 years’ experience of teaching, consultancy/knowledge transfer researching and publishing in the fields of human resource management, entrepreneurship, international business, business research methods and business strategy.
