Join Dr John Lamb (University of Aberdeen Business School) to hear his seminar on The Mean Value in Big Data.

Abstract: In big-data applications we often wish to estimate and compare the mean value (or some other statistic) of a large number p of data items where there is uncertainty in measurement. For example, we may wish to compare mean stock-market returns or scores in various league tables. In such applications, statistics is important, because it prevents us from trying to infer knowledge from patterns that are rather likely due to chance.
