10 Years of Rana Plaza Tragedy: Some Reflections on Working Conditions and Ethical Trading Practices in Fast Fashion

On April 24, 2013, in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, The Rana Plaza, an eight-story structure that accommodated five garment factories with more than 5,000 workers manufacturing garments for global clothing and fashion brands, collapsed. The incident was the deadliest disaster in the history of the global trade and production chain resulting in the deaths of more than 1,100 workers with 2,500 more injured.

We are running an in-person event on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Rana Plaza, and we will mainly present our research findings from our recently completed project ‘The impact of global clothing retailers’ unfair practices on Bangladeshi suppliers’.

The event is jointly organised by the University of Aberdeen's Business School and the Centre for Global Development.
