Biography

Sola Kasim holds a PhD degree in Petroleum and Natural Resources economics obtained from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom and, B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. degrees in economics, from the University of Lagos, Lagos, (UNILAG), Nigeria.

He currently works as a Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Energy Economics at the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK. Previously, he worked variously in Nigeria as an economics consultant and, university lecturer and researcher in a number of universities, including UNILAG. His consultancy expertise include the areas of oil and gas market fundamentals, regulation (utilities), environmental protection, and, economic empowerment/poverty alleviation. As a World Bank consultant he designed and implemented an electricity tariff-fixing framework for Nigeria. Also, he contributed advice to Nigeria’s Federal Government on the issue of arresting desertification and deforestation through the development and deployment of alternatives to fuel wood.

His current research interest is in the area of the economics of climate change mitigation through Carbon Capture Use and Storage (CCUS).

He has published journal articles in academic and professional journals including The Energy Journal, Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Energy Policy and Energy Economics.

Research Overview

Petroleum Economics: Econometric modelling of oil and gas exploration, development and production; production decline rates; enhanced and improved recovery; the role of hydrocarbons in the (economic) development process.

Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Economics (with special interest in the economics of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)): Econometric and financial modelling of CCS value chain economics; optimal stand-alone and integrated CO2 capture, source-to-sink transportation, and storage investments; CO2 valuation; CCS market arrangements/business models; CO2-EOR; CCS incentivisation; CCS in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM); CCS in the EU-ETS.

The economics of the integrated CCS value chain in the UK/UKCS.

The economics of CO2 for EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) in the UKCS.

Fiscal incentives for CO2 capture, sequestration and EOR.
