First lesson, Christum in cruce pendentem.

The lesson (HL, 2, p 143) invokes the grief of the Virgin Mary she watched her son hanging on the cross; she wept and beat her breast, fulfilling the words of Simeon that she would be pierced by the sword of compassion (Luke, 2:35). Her only solace at this time was Christ’s disciple [St John].
