Notes:

The mort house is located to the south of the graveyard and is built into the bank on the east elevation, and effectively forms part of an external boundary wall to the south along the coastal pathway. The walls are reported to be three feet thick and are of random sandstone blocks bound with lime mortar and shells in the aggregate. The tails are of droved red sandstone. All the main openings are now boarded up to prevent access to the interior. The north wall is located within the graveyard boundaries and has a single square headed blocked window to the left hand side of the doorway and a single arrow ventilation slit to the right hand side. There is a small porthole opening to the centre of the west gable apex, perhaps echoing the fact that ship owners had been instrumental in orchestrating the construction of the mort house. There is a solid buttress to the south elevation, and a small square window opening to the far right, close to the buttress.

In around 1991, the Rev. Norman Grant, the Minister at Limekilns,  was speaking to a fairly elderly gentleman who had lived his whole life in that part of south west Fife. He remembered as a boy being told a story by his uncle - probably his great uncle. The uncle had been one of a number of ferrymen who rowed the Forth. He was contracted by two men to go from Lothian to Fife and who asked him to wait for them. They returned with a heavy cloth wrapped bundle. On the return journey he asked what the load was - and was told to mind his own business. A peculiar smell made him stop mid-river and demand an answer. At that point one man drew a gun and told him to ask no more questions and to row. He was also warned to keep his mouth shut. The gentleman to whom the Rev Grant was speaking was in no doubt that his uncle had transported grave robbers with a body bound for Edinburgh.
