Notes:
There has been a Christian presence at this site ever since the Celtic Abbot founded a monastery in the 10th century. This was followed by a a Roman Collegiate Church of 1442, by a second presbyterian church in 1688, and by the present church of 1841. The domed mausoleum of 1795 contains the remains of the Dukes and Duchesses of Argyll.
In the kirkyard there are two watch houses, one ruinous and the other in good condition. Both have windows looking out over the older part of the kirkyard and both have a fireplace and window.
The ruinous building is 2 storied with the windows and fireplace serving the upper storey. The lower storey is reached by stone steps and is windowless and may have served as a mort house in which to store bodies prior to burial.
