Join Museums & Special Collections curator Jenny Downes for a look into the history of Arctic exploration in the new exhibition titled, ‘The Northwest Passage’, at 5.30pm on Tuesday 22 November.

‘The Northwest Passage’ presents new work by artist Barbara Rae, inspired by her journeys from Orkney to the Canadian Arctic in 2015-2017. These artworks are displayed alongside collections relating to nineteenth-century Orcadian explorer John Rae, who crossed many of the same paths as Barbara Rae. The first European to hear of the fate of the doomed Franklin expedition, John Rae was an exceptional explorer who mapped thousands of miles of Arctic coastline and, unusually for his time, learned hunting, travel and survival techniques from Indigenous people in the Arctic.

Tickets are £6 each and include a guided tour of the exhibition, drinks and light refreshments.
