Princes as Philanthropists: Edwardian Era Monarchy and the Politics of Giving
-

This is a past event

Join Dr Heidi Mehrkens on Thursday 22 October from 5pm-6.15pm (BST) as she explores what motivated royal princes of the Edwardian era to become leading philanthropists of their time, using the example of the King Edward's Hospital Fund for London (today known as the King's Fund).

At the turn of the century, voices in British politics and society identified problems within the public health sector and discussed the benefits of scientific medical research. Keen to represent what Frank Prochaska has coined “welfare monarchy”, both Edward VII and George V, when the Princes of Wales, addressed these concerns as dedicated presidents of the Hospital Fund. Meanwhile, critics openly challenged the princes’ unchecked control over the charity’s organisation as being out of touch with modern times – inviting some historical reflection on the public-facing role of monarchies in pre-World War 1 societies.
