Aberdeen in America

Professor George Boyne met with Aberdeen alumni and friends in New York during his first visit to the Big Apple in his role as Principal and Vice-Chancellor in April.

Professor Boyne attended the board meeting of the University of Aberdeen Foundation before a larger than life group of Aberdeen alumni took part in the annual New York Tartan Day Parade up Sixth Avenue.

From Aberdeen to Europe

Beginning on 9 May, we launched a ten-day series of events for our alumni across Europe. Thanks to the dedication of our alumni ambassadors we were able to hold events in Brussels, Helsinki, Warsaw, Paris, Berlin and Athens. Over 100 alumni attended the events in person and many more engaged through our social media activity.

New On-Demand Learning website launched

Alumni are invited to explore On-Demand Learning, our new home for online short courses. Dip in and study at your own pace, with flexible hours to fit around work. You can build postgraduate qualifications, including Masters degrees, one short course at a time and as an alumni you also enjoy a 20% discount!

As part of our From Aberdeen to Europe programme we spoke to a few of our alumni around the continent with interesting tales to tell!

Katy Campbell

From Aberdeen to Berlin - via London and LA - Katy Campbell has managed to fit a lot into her career since graduating with an MA from the University of Aberdeen in 2011! Now Head of Brand and Communications at APX Axel Springer Porsche GmbH - an early-stage venture capital programme for digital start-ups - Katy also works as a mentor for a range of organisations and recently co-founded Challenging Challenges, a mental health awareness platform.

Arthur Vincent

Using sport to teach language skills is at the centre of 2010 graduate Arthur Vincent’s mission to broaden the horizons for underprivileged kids from the sprawling suburbs or ‘banlieues’ of Paris.

Arthur is the founder and President of Planet Citizens, a charity that uses sports groups and volunteer coaches to teach foreign languages to children who would otherwise have minimal exposure to new languages.

Scott McCulloch

Being part of the Aberdeen family is so close to Scott McCulloch’s heart that the 2012 law graduate single-handedly set up the University’s first alumni network in Brussels. Launched 18 months ago, the network is one of the most active in Europe and was the first location on our European tour a couple of weeks ago.

Daniel Wolk & Katherine Claude

2008 graduates Daniel Wolk and Katherine Claude met during their first few weeks at University over 14 years ago. Now living in Berlin, they told us the story of their university romance, the joy of their first child, and how their time in Aberdeen has helped to shape their lives.

   Giving Back

Upcoming launch of Alumni Volunteer Programme

Our alumni volunteer programme is due to launch on June 1 2019 and our volunteering opportunities will include mentoring current students, supporting prospective students, leading international networks, coordinating reunions and so much more! We’re excited to launch the programme and we hope you’re just as keen to get involved. We also want to say a big thank you to everyone who has already volunteered their time!

Alumni poster campaign

We’re currently working on a poster campaign to inspire current and prospective students as well as fellow alumni and we’re looking for alumni who are willing to be featured. The campaign includes physical and digital posters that contain degree and career information.

Get your walking boots on for the Aberdeen Kiltwalk

In March the Development Trust launched a £6 million fundraising campaign for our pioneering women’s health research. On 2 June a dedicated team of walkers will be taking part in the Aberdeen Kiltwalk to support this.

Run Balmoral success

Huge thanks to our amazing runners who took part in Run Balmoral in April, raising almost £11,000 to support our Cancer Research Programme and our women’s health research.

The team included 30 runners from local firm A2+B and volunteer fundraiser Irene Black, who took part for the seventh year in a row.

Jazz event helps support scholarship

In March our Alumni team, in conjunction with former members of the now-dissolved Alumnus Association, hosted a Jazz Afternoon Tea which raised £1300 for the Alumnus Association Scholarship which supports students in financial need each year.

Student musicians share Ogston Music Prize

This year's Ogston Music Prize was contested by six worthy finalists. Ultimately the judges decided that Matthew Kilner and David Walsh should share the award, which was presented by Professor Derek Ogston himself.

Sunday 23 June - Pancake Topping Tips and Tastings

Do you prefer chocolate or jam on your pancake? Fruit? Or ice cream? Come along to Baxters Highland Village in Fochabers at 2pm to get some topping tips from Head Chef Kevin Hay and some nutritional advice from Professor Alex Johnstone of the Rowett Institute.

This free event is open to all ages and there will be fun activities for children. For more information, click here.

Thursday 27 June - Porter's Gin Tasting in London

Join us at Scotland House in Temple, London, to sample some gin creations, along with some canapés, and learn more about the history of Porter’s Gin which was founded by University of Aberdeen graduates Ben Iravani and Josh Rennie.

Friday 28 June - Medicine and Plants Walk at Cruickshank Botanic Garden

Join Curator Mark Paterson and his colleagues from 1.30pm - 5pm for a tour around the gardens, learning about the hidden gems and medicinal plants within the Cruickshank walls. We will also be serving delicious summer refreshments on what is sure to be a wonderful afternoon!

At this alumni-exclusive event you will have the chance to sample some delicious gin creations, including Porter’s Gin at Orchid in Aberdeen. You will also get a sneak peek at the basement micro-distillery where the magic of Porter’s Gin is created!
