Professor Sir Dugald Baird was Regius Professor of Midwifery in Aberdeen from 1937 to 1965. During this time he transformed the obstetric services such that for a time Aberdeen had the best birth outcomes in the UK, and among the best in Europe. He was the first to show the huge effect of social factors on obstetric outcome and was a strong supporter of fertility control and reproductive rights for women. Under his leadership Aberdeen became a centre of excellence for obstetric practice and research.
