A favoured backdrop for graduation photos, King's Quad is the heart of the ancient University. Despite the wings of the college all dating from different eras, they have been incorporated into a coherent whole.

The college's ancient well, having been lost for a period at some point in the 19th century, was rediscovered in the 1930s when the turf and surrounding paths were being recut, and was subsequently restored.

The entrance to the King's Conference Centre is guarded by two statues, one a unicorn, Scotland's national animal, and one a lion, representing England. The animals are found together on the British coat of arms and their combination dates to 1603 and the Union of the Crowns that took place when James VI of Scotland also ascended to the English throne.
