November Graduations - student message

Dear student

The University recognises how important attending a graduation ceremony is to our student community and that the cancellation of previous ceremonies has been extremely disappointing. The decision to cancel those ceremonies was not taken lightly and was based on the Covid situation, government guidance and the risk to public health.

As Covid restrictions continue to ease and, with the successful rollout of the vaccine programme having a positive impact, we are delighted to confirm that we are currently planning for in-person graduation ceremonies for the week commencing 22 November 2021.

The health and wellbeing of our students and staff remain our number one priority and as much as we would love to hold these ceremonies on campus as usual, the historic nature of our buildings means they would not be of a big enough size or meet the ventilation requirements for such an event.

Fortunately, we have secured space at The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA) which provides more than adequate space and ventilation to ensure the highest possible safety standards can be followed. Whilst the venue has moved, the ceremonies will remain largely unchanged, creating an opportunity for you, your fellow graduates and your families to celebrate your success together.

We recognise that many of you will have formed a strong connection with the University campus so please be assured that whilst the ceremonies will take place at TECA, there will also be an opportunity for you to revisit campus with your friends and family before or after the ceremony.

Planning for graduations and the supporting activity is ongoing but we expect to be able to provide a real sense of occasion to enjoy pre and post ceremony celebratory hospitality safely, a visit to your School and great campus photo opportunities, taking in over 500 years of the University’s ancient history, allowing you to create some special history of your own.

Please ensure that you apply to graduate by Tuesday 19 October, more details on how to do this can be found here. Only those students who have completed their studies and are due to graduate in November 2021 are eligible to apply. Students who graduated prior to this will have an opportunity to attend a celebration event in 2022 and more details will be made available nearer the time.

Traditional graduation gowns and photography can be ordered in advance from our partners Ede & Ravenscroft. We expect this to be available from 10 October.

For those of you who are unable to attend due to travel restrictions, personal circumstance or for any other reason, the ceremonies will be broadcast live online and will be available for viewing at a later date as well. Regardless of how you choose to participate in your graduation, we very much look forward to seeing our students graduate in-person again at these important events.

Ceremony details will be published shortly on our graduation website.  Please keep checking this website for the most up to date information.
