The Recreation Centre is home to the University of Aberdeen Students Association (AUSA). The AUSA was formed in 2000 and since then the Students’ Association’s focus has become more and more towards student activities, welfare and support and representation. The move to the Butchart building has opened up many more new opportunities for engagement with students. The centre houses Alfie's coffee shop and the second hand bookshop Bookends.

In 2010 AUSA successfully achieved the Bronze Award in the Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI) which provides a quality benchmark for Students’ Associations/Unions throughout the UK. Winning this award shows just how far AUSA has come since its creation.

Today the Students’ Association is moving forward with many initiatives and works closely with the University to ensure it's fully accountable and represents the needs of all 14,500 of its members; the students at the University of Aberdeen.
