The maps and sketches that allowed the Survey geologists to decipher the tectonics of mountain building are shown for the first time in this exhibition. In the 1880s each surveyor in the Northwest Highlands collected data as they mapped directly onto working documents called "field slips". They used notebooks to draw profiles, sketches and to develop ideas. Data from the team was compiled into geological syntheses called "clean copy" maps in the office in Edinburgh. Reproductions of these "clean copies" form the backbone of this exhibition and are supported by scenes from the notebooks, and field slips of the original surveyors that can be seen by following the "Interpretative Panels" link. |
