| Why mountains? | ||||||||||
The World's great mountain ranges like the Himalayas and the Alps challenge and inspire people. High mountains influence climate, mountain landscapes chart climate change, and mountains are home to unique habitats and resources. But the roots of all mountain ranges lie in the tectonic upheavals that their geology records. Northwest Scotland is where many of the scientific ideas behind mountain building were developed. |
