Practical Guide to
Fair Trade shopping

Why buy Fair Trade?
Buying fairly traded goods directly helps third world farmers work their way out of poverty.
When you buy Fair Trade, you can be sure that:

  • No child or forced labour was used.
  • Working conditions were healthy and safe.
  • The farmers are paid for their products a price that covers the costs of sustainable production and decent living.
  • You get high quality foods, carefully selected by the growers themselves.
Fair trade products
All products carrying the FAIRTRADE mark
umbrella  body  called  Fair Trade Labelling
meet standards set by the international Organisation International (FLO).

In many supermarkets, you will easily find Fair Trade :
  • coffee
  • tea
  • cocoa
  • bananas
  • mangoes
  • coconuts
  • orange juice
  • honey
  • beer
A wide range of other products from clothes to furniture may also meet the Fair Trade Criteria but not necessarily carry the FAIRTRADE label.

Fair Trade shopping guide

  • Where are fair trade products available? There are a number of places around Aberdeen where fair trade products are available. The University shop in the High Street stocks Fair Trade chocolate, tea and coffee. Costa in the library foyer has a fair trade option at no extra cost if you ask. And of course the Fair Trade Cafe on a Wednesday is the best place to get things like chocolate and bananas. Bigger shops like Sainsbury's and the Co-Op also have quite good Fair Trade ranges (even beer in Sainsbury's) and in town there are places like the Third World Shop.

If your local shop doesn't stock Fair Trade, you could always ask why not!
