A major topic is the control of the heart and peripheral vasculature. This includes mechano- and chemo-receptors, autonomic reflexes, central pathways and control mechanisms. In depth coverage is given to vasoactive hormones and local control of blood vessels and peripheral and central interactions. The inter-play between cardiac and respiratory systems is considered in relation to control mechanisms and tissue demands. Exercise physiology and body fluid balance under stress is a further major topic. Practical sessions involve work on mammals and man and include measurements of cardiovascular and pulmonary function and exercise. Students also work with computer simulations of cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The course consists of 4 lectures, 1 seminar and 1 laboratory session (lasting 8 hours) per week. It is examined by continuous assessment of practical work and essays, and a 3-hour written exam. Pre-requisites : (BM3001 or PA3001 or [PY3001 and PY3002]) or (BM3002 and BM3003 and BM3004 and BM3005) Course Organiser : Prof. Cecil Kidd (ext. 3004) c.kidd@abdn.ac.uk |
