This course takes homeostasis and environmental physiology as major themes. Lecture material ranges from cellular processes to the whole organism and interactions with the environment. The course starts by considering cell volume regulation, inter-cellular communication, acid-base balance and the maintenance of a constant internal milieu. This is followed by thermal balance, exercise physiology, and the problems posed by extreme environments. Lecture and seminar material is accompanied by use of the microcomputer in data capture and analysis and a team based practical project. The course consists of 4 lectures and 1 laboratory session (lasting 4-8 hours) per week, and is examined by continuous assessment of course work and a 3-hour written exam. Pre-requisites : PY2001 and PY2501 Co-requisites : PY3001 or PA3001 or BM3001 Course Organiser : Dr. Ken Page (ext. 3025) k.page@abdn.ac.uk |
