This course considers the major mammalian physiological systems and their operation under normal conditions. It covers; the structure and function of the cardiovascular system, including the actions of the heart and control of arterial blood pressure and blood flow; the kidney and control of body fluid volume and composition; and respiratory, gastrointestinal and reproductive physiology. In each system, the specific neural and humoral control mechanisms are considered. The course consists of 3 lectures and 1 laboratory session per week, and is examined by continuous assessment of practical work and a 2-hour written exam.
