Physiology (A) Control Mechanisms (PY2001, 3 Credits)

The course considers mammalian neural and humoral communication and control mechanisms with special reference to man. It deals with: the physiology of nerve and muscle; transduction of sensory information by receptors; cell - cell signalling; the physiology of the autonomic nervous system; neuro-endocrine integration and some aspects of endocrinology (including reference to intermediary metabolism). Central nervous mechanisms controlling movement, posture, sensation and other aspects of higher neural function and development will also be addressed. The course consists of 3 lectures and 1 laboratory session per week. It is examined by continuous assessment of practical work and a 2-hour written exam.

Pre-requisites : (CM1003 or CM1004) and BI1002 and (CM1504) and (BI1501 or BI1502)
