Oscar Braun Pen Shop Strongly recommended by many on the alt.collecting.pens-pencils
P.W. Akkerman Recommended by Marten van de Kraats on the alt.collecting.pens-pencils as the best pen store in Netherlands. The pen store is in Hague.  Please note that the P.W. Akkerman in Amsterdam, although going by the same name, is not the same company as P.W. Akkerman in Hague (Kalverstraat 149, 1012XB Amsterdam, 020-6023 1649).  Apparently they're originally from the same family but they've split.  I've asked the shop keeper at Amsterdam whether the two shops are the same and he kind of look offended by the question - so don't ask that question when you go there.  The Amsterdam shop doesn't look as grand as the one in Hague but they have that old fashioned understated look that I love.

MB Users's Comments [back to Mont Blanc]

  • very annoyed
  • very satisfied  -  The page used to be hosted by "Mont Blanc Pen Collectors Net".  The page looks like the website has now gone under.  [accessed on 15 August 2005].

Markets / Fairs [Top of Page]

  • London Bermonsey Street Market, Tube/Underground: Bank.  Fair starts at 4.30am on Fridays, but most of the shops aren't set up until 6am.  (BTW I was there early not through sheer determination but more like I was staying at the student accommodation of King's College London just down the road from there, the room was yucky but cheap, the mattress and the pillow and the duvey stink so much that I had to buy a sleeping bag.)  The white truck on one side of the market sells really really nice homemade apple turnover and hot chocolate.  Always take a flashlight with you so you can see where you're going.

STATIONERY - You've got to get some paper to write on, right? [Top of Page]

  • The ITALIAN CORNER, 16 Royal Arcarde, London W1. Tube/Underground: Green Park. Tel: 020 7499 9469: If you're UK based, this is possibly the only place in UK that stocks Pineider paper (one of the few companies that make 100% cotton bond/rag paper, Napoleon, Byron and Maria Callas got their calling cards engraved by Pineider). They also stocks pens and inks produced in Italy (Stipula, Aurora, etc.).  BTW Pineider's website hasn't got much information about anything and it's down [accessed 15 August 2005] so don't bother clicking your mouse at it!

  • More about Pineider [added 15 August 2005] - they have shops in Rome (I saw 2 - Via Fontanella Borghese 22, and Via dei Due Macelli 68, +39 06 679 5884 - 06 678 9013, a slow traveller prefers the former) and at least one in Florence.  In Florence the shop is located in Piazza della Signoria (+39 055284655, you will most certainly pass by it if you're visiting Florence as a tourist because it's where you'll find Palazzo Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery).  Their shops look like boutique chains - think Chanel, Dior, Gucci - they sell expensive leather goods to hold their exclusive paper products (and some more, through the store windows the leather goods looks similar to Smythson's products) and they have some pens lying around too.  I was rather disappointed as from what I've read about the shop, I expected to find some crummy old men who know everything about paper and dies.  Instead I find several courteous professionally dressed ladies, which is what I should have expected given I walked into a shop selling paper that are like £1 or more for an A4.  Time has moved on and I'm left behind...

  • Smythson of Bond Street, London - They make fine stationery products too.  I contacted them a few years ago and asked if they do 100% cotton bond, they said no.

  • Crane & Co. - US stationery company, makes 100% cotton bond!!!

  • Clairefontaine - French stationery company.  I don't know if their paper is 100% cotton bond but loads of FP users vouch for it.
