The study of bats gained a new dimension when sound-recording was invented. Bats utter many sounds that we cannot hear (except perhaps in childhood): echolocating calls, 'feeding buzzes', 'song flight' calls associated with mating, and other social noises. From recordings we can prepare sonagrams of these calls that show graphically their duration, pitch, and amplitude.
