King crabs or horseshoe crabs
5 species This group, more common in Paleozoic times 570-225 million years ago, is today found mainly in warm seas. These crabs have bodies divided into two sections, both encased in heavy protective plates. The head/thorax carries five pairs of walking legs and a pair of pincers. The other section, the abdomen, terminates in a long spine. The king crab breathes through book-gills on the abdomen, which resemble thin plates arranged like the leaves of a book. |
