This page contains links to a downloadable program and associated userguide for the calculation of energy expenditure and CO2 production when utilising the DLW technique for studies of both humans and animals. This program was designed by John Speakman and written by Cliff Lemen of Natureware, Inc. USA. The programming was paid for by a grant from the Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) of the UK Scientific Services section.

The program allows the determination of body water also from dilution experiments.

The calculations in the program cover all the different equations and approaches that were summarised in my book (Doubly-labelled water: Theory and practice - details available elsewhere on this web-site). The method uses the iteration approach detailed in Speakman (1995)* to generate mean and standard deviaitons for the generated estimates and can be used for 2 point and multi-point experiments.

The software is provided free of charge on the condition that its use is acknowledged. An appropriate citation is this web site, and also the USERGUIDE.

The program occupies 900 kB of memory and runs in windows on the PC platform. A Mac version of the program is not available. Minimum configuration to run the program is a 486 machine running windows 95, with 1Mb of RAM.

The program may be copied as many times as you want, used on multiple machines and distributed to as many other users as you wish as long as all other users are made aware of the conditions under which it is supplied - ie appropriate acknowledgement.
