These pages describe our research project on "Fast Field-Cycling Magnetic Resonance Imaging". The project is funded through a £2.4M grant from Round 6 of Research Councils UK's "Basic Technology" programme.

We aim to make a step change in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, by breaking one of its fundamental "laws" - that the applied magnetic field must be held constant during image acquisition. By deliberately switching the magnetic field during the collection of MR images, we will gain access to radically new types of endogenous contrast.

We will also greatly improve the effectiveness of contrast-agent-enhanced MRI, by designing contrast agents that are tailored exclusively for use with the new techniques.

The project will generate the enabling technlogy to make FFC-MRI an invaluable tool for basic biomedical research, through to clinical research and diagnosis, with strong potential for applications well beyond the biomedical sphere.
